Fake IT Support Calls

In the fast-paced world of small business IT, keeping systems running smoothly is a top priority. Cybercriminals know this, and they’re taking advantage by posing as IT support representatives in an attempt to gain access to your business systems.

How the Scam Works Scammers call or email small businesses claiming to be from a reputable IT support company or even your own internal IT department. They often say they’ve detected a serious security issue and need remote access to your system to resolve it. Once granted access, they install malware, steal sensitive company data, or lock down your system for ransom. In some cases, they may even demand payment for fake repairs or charge excessive fees for unnecessary services.

How to Protect Your Business

  • Never grant remote access to unsolicited callers claiming to be IT support. Legitimate companies will not cold-call you for access.

  • Verify any IT-related calls by reaching out to your provider directly using contact information from official sources.

  • Train employees to recognize social engineering tactics and phishing attempts. Conduct regular security awareness training to keep your team updated on the latest threats.

  • Use multi-factor authentication (MFA) to secure accounts in case credentials are stolen. This adds an extra layer of security and prevents unauthorized access.

  • Implement endpoint protection software to detect and block suspicious activity before it can do damage.
